How Ebay Screwed up in China and Lost Billions !!!

Ebay had it made – they bought out the biggest auction site in china six years ago and instantly had 80% of the market there.

This is a multi billion dollar market – its no game. So what did they go and do ?

They moved the whole operation offshore to the United States. How dumb can you fricken be ?
The traffic dropped by 50% immediately. Thanks to corporate brown nosing and blame shuffling the top management at Ebay didn’t even know this – What kind of management is that ?

The competition moved in immediately with more than a little help from the Chinese government – as one would expect.

The competitor Taobao.com now has total dominance and is soon to be making more money than Amazon.com.

Thats $15 billion a year annually in sales from a company that did not exist 10 years ago.

Clearly we can learn from this – Ebay had a foot in the door and pulled it out – they should have expanded the technical base in China not withdrawn to the USA.

How Chinese Social Networks Make Money

Not by selling advertising like Google. They make much of their money by selling virtual avatars and similar virtual goods.

Much internet activity in Asia is also based upon mobile devices.

A great idea for a killer application is software that will turn a mobile device into a virtual pet or personality that takes on a life of its own.

Over the next five years the internet population of China should grow to beyond that of USA/Europe combined.

We should expect to see more of their revenue come from advertising in this period but we can also expect more western online revenue to come from virtual goods.

There will also be a greater shift in web activity away from conventional screen based surfing toward virtual environments and superior visual interfaces.

The technology that will enable this is augmented and virtual reality enabled 3D eyeware – superior to the current commercially available products.

Chinese Internet Users Surpass USA Population

chinese internet users

Heres a larger pic:

Right now I intend to spend 2-4 weeks sharpening my blog farm and hub building skills – then I am automating a bunch of new domains with chinese content. Will focus these projects on the chinese market.

With RSS, mashups, autoblogging & social network automation it matters little what language the content is as its all syndicated.

Ping.FM and hellotxt.com blast your Web.20 !!!

How many tweets have you made on twitter ? I have made over 1600 I believe. I learned of twitter a long time ago now and friendfeed not long after. From the 30daychallenge I learned to link my twitter tweets into friendfeed and facebook.

So all my tweets automatically update there too. But this week I discovered how to integrate my tweets with 50 other web2.0 communication portals also – not only that but my blog posts can also be integrated.

I may have to disconnect the facebook and friendfeed system I have in place now or I could cause a tweetloop.

I cant wait to set this up. What fun.

Yahoo Pipes and Google App engine

I’m planning to start building some large WordPressMU blog directories.

The sites will be too large for me to create the content – I have to aggregate it.
Preferably in such a way that I am not splogging or outright scraping content.

In my research I have discovered the partial to full RSS scripts that will extract the full posts from a partial RSS feed. EG:

http://echodittolabs.org/fulltextrss

Just enter an RSS feed URL into the form and it will convert it to full text via HTML extraction.

This lead me to Yahoo pipes
yahoo pipes

Which is designed to aggregate feeds and create unique content – there are several pipes for full text RSS conversion.

What you can do with pipes and Google App engine is nothing short of incredible.

I cant really describe it but imagine being able to combine content from all of googles services, ebay, yahoo, amazon, every blog on the planet withan RSS feed, every website with an RSS feed, datafeeds etc etc.

Not just in a flat and brainless way but in an interactive, unique and useful way.

Google App engine taps into Googles vast server farm. This is a small hint of what the internet will soon become. You see the most advanced supercomputing systems are now in the Petaflop category – that is very close to the hardware equivalent of the human brain. In the next ten years supercomputers will be advanced beyond the human level.

These machines will be linked with fiber optic grid technology to the internet. You will be able to access these machines and their hyper intelligence via web based computing.

Online applications, gadgets and mashups will thus provide services that desktop computers can simply not perform. We are begining to see this now but it will explode on the next decade. What will also explode is the interfacing of consumer electronics to this online distributed computing network.

3D internal Linking Visualization

Man I found some cool software that gives you a 3D view of any websites Internal Link Structure.

You can zoom, pan, rotate using the arrow keys. Press H for help, F1 to toggle full screen.

If you want to make a 3D movie you will need to download Fraps as it runs on an openGL window.

link structure

A very useful tool for link analysis.

Google Wave Kills Twitter !!!

Yep google wave must surely spell death for friendfeed and twitter.

It doesn’t exist in the public domain yet but it looks pretty cool.
